MURIC demands apology over alleged teargassing of Lagos pensioners

Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has called upon the Lagos State Police Command to immediately apologize for allegedly using teargas on pensioners during a recent protest. The organisation expressed its disapproval of the alleged action in a statement issued by its Executive Director, Professor Isiaq Akintola. The statement was shared with DAILY POST on Tuesday.

According to DAILY POST's report, some retirees staged a protest in Lagos State on Monday, demanding payment for their entitlements. Reports suggest that the pensioners were reportedly teargassed by the police during the demonstration. In response to the incident, Akintola demanded an apology from the police for what he deemed an "irrational attack" on the retirees.

He also urged the state government to swiftly address the issue of settling the pensioners' entitlements. Akintola stated in the statement, "We strongly condemn the use of teargas on non-violent protesters, especially senior citizens, many of whom are frail and vulnerable. This was most reckless, unprofessional, and lacking in any form of civility."

MURIC further demanded an "unreserved apology" from the state police command, emphasizing that retired individuals who have served the state government with dedication and intellect deserve to be treated with respect and dignity in their retirement years.
