Messi's mother moved to tears by his retirement, wife reflects on 21-year Argentina journey

Lionel Messi s family have expressed conflicting emotions following his choice to retire from Argentina s national team. His mother, Celia María Cuccittini, was devastated by the news, while his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, reflected on their 21-year experience together. Messi announced his retirement recently, concluding his international career after the 2026 World Cup final, which Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain.

During his time with Argentina, Messi played 207 matches, scoring 125 goals and supplying 68 assists. He claimed the World Cup and Copa América titles. Messi described leaving as an "extremely painful decision," but felt it was the right time, considering his father's recent passing. His mother confirmed she had known about his retirement beforehand, but the announcement still had a deep emotional impact.

Celia María Cuccittini said the family is sad, but the most important thing is for Messi to be happy. She recalled her late husband's words about their son stopping his career, and how it all happened at once. Antonela Roccuzzo emphasized her pride in Messi's 21-year journey with Argentina, sharing that they witnessed his successes and challenges.

She highlighted how their children grew up witnessing Messi's determination and perseverance, and how they saw him achieve his dreams. Roccuzzo concluded by expressing her gratitude for being by Messi s side through all of this, stating that their love for him knows no bounds.
