MapQuest is suddenly No. 4 in the Apple App Store — here's why

MapQuest has suddenly climbed to the No. 4 spot in the Apple App Store, behind only ChatGPT, Vinted, and ESPN Fantasy Sports. The rise in popularity is attributed to the renaming of Lake Ontario by President Trump to "Lake America" and the subsequent update by Google Maps to reflect this change. As a result, Google Maps users in the U.S. and internationally who oppose Trump's policies have turned to MapQuest as an alternative, as the app has stated it would not change the name of the lake.

Doug Berger, General Manager of MapQuest, stated that the company's approach was to remain consistent with its users and provide an app that keeps the names they are familiar with. The app's ranking is the highest it has ever been in the company's 30-year history, and it even launched a game where users can rename Lake Ontario and share the new moniker via social media.
