Maharashtra Govt Grants 1-Year Exemption From Loose Edible Oil Ban, Forms 2 Committees

Mumbai, September 1, 2026: Maharashtra's government has temporarily exempted the sale of loose edible oil from the state Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) ban, following protests from traditional oil traders. The move was made after discussions between Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and industry representatives. The FDA, led by Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, had proposed a ban on loose edible oil due to concerns about adulteration and maintaining quality and food safety standards.

CM Fadnavis chaired a meeting with cabinet ministers, senior officials, and dignitaries to discuss the issue. Some traders opposed the proposal, arguing that loose oil sales were integral to their traditional occupations and that many low-income consumers relied on it due to its affordability. Following the meeting, Fadnavis announced the suspension of the FDA's decision for one year.

He acknowledged that the exemption would be temporary and that businesses would need to adapt to the law once the period ends. A joint committee comprising FDA officials and edible oil trade representatives will examine necessary changes to comply with food safety regulations. The government will provide assistance if required. The state currently has 2,103 licensed loose edible oil traders, with 370 holding licenses for repackaging and 489 for manufacturing.
