Macabes BC win Ghana Koshien Baseball Championship

The Macabes Baseball Club, hailing from Ghana's Eastern Region, emerged victorious as champions of the third annual Ghana Koshien U-15 Baseball Championship. The prestigious event took place at the Koshien Field of Labone Senior High School in Accra last Sunday. The Macabes defeated their Greater Accra counterparts, the Marine Stars, with a resounding score of 9-1 in the final game of the two-day tournament.

This championship event, organized by the Ghana Baseball and Softball Federation (GBSF) with support from the Japan-Africa Baseball & Softball Foundation (J-ABS) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), was part of the J-ABS Africa 55 Koshien Project. The project aims to establish national baseball tournaments across Africa.

The tournament featured five teams in total, including Tema All Stars, Volta Lakers, and Ancient Giants. Isaac Mensah of the Macabes Baseball Club was awarded the Most Valuable Player in the male category, while Jacqueline Amponsah of Tema All Stars won the female category. The event's special Guest of Honour, the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Hiroshi Yoshimoto, praised the winners for their outstanding performance.

He also pledged continued support from his embassy for the GBSF and the growth of the sport in the coming year, noting a significant improvement in playing standards since the previous year's edition. Vice President of the GBSF, Mr. Edmund Kwesi Ackom, commended the winners for their display and applauded the general performance of all teams in this year's tournament.

He also lauded the regional coordinators for their efforts to promote and develop the sport across the country. The tournament concluded with an exhibition game between a selected Ghanaian side and the Japanese volunteers, which the latter won 6-3.
