Lviv doctors successfully deliver healthy baby boy 97 days after mother's water broke

In a remarkable medical feat, obstetricians at Saint Nicholas Children’s Hospital in Lviv have set a new record by successfully sustaining a woman's pregnancy for nearly 100 days following premature rupture of the membranes. Khrystyna Pryshlyak, a 28-year-old resident of Lviv Oblast, delivered her first child through a planned cesarean section. Pryshlyak's water broke prematurely at 22 weeks during her second pregnancy, placing her at significant risk of intrauterine infection due to the loss of protective amniotic fluid.

Clinical staff at the hospital monitored Pryshlyak daily, conducted continuous diagnostic screenings, and administered preventative therapy. The patient was placed on strict bed rest for three months. These measures enabled the medical team to extend the pregnancy to 36 weeks, maintaining the health of both mother and child over a span of 97 days.

Obstetrician-gynecologist Ihor Fedashko emphasized that the primary objective was to prevent infection and provide the baby with sufficient time for vital organ development. When labor began at 36 weeks, everything proceeded smoothly. Pryshlyak delivered a healthy boy weighing 2,490 grams (5.5 lbs) and measuring 49 centimeters (19.3 inches). The newborn showed no signs of distress and did not require resuscitation.

Despite the uterine scar from her previous cesarean section, the delivery proceeded naturally. Khrystyna Pryshlyak expressed her gratitude, stating that the doctors reassured her and saved her son. The newborn was named Nazar, chosen by his five-year-old brother. Pryshlyak and her newborn have since been discharged home.
