Limpopo police launch manhunt after suspected buffalo poaching in Kruger National Park

The Limpopo police have initiated a search for those behind a suspected buffalo poaching incident in the Kruger National Park, resulting in the death of an estimated R300,000 buffalo bull. The occurrence took place on Sunday morning at the Tshikuyu Block of the park, situated in the Masisi policing area of the Vhembe District. According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, a ranger on patrol observed a vulture soaring above and ventured to investigate.

Upon arrival, the ranger found the buffalo bull's head, fragments of its skin, and five distinct human footprints as well as dog tracks. The ranger followed these tracks until they headed towards the park's fence, leading to Benndemutale village. The estimated economic value of the buffalo bull, killed illegally, is R300,000. A case of poaching has been filed at Masisi police station, but the suspects remain unidentified, and no arrests have been made yet.

Limpopo police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Jan Scheepers, denounced the incident, urging intensified measures to combat wildlife crime. He emphasized the ongoing collaboration with law enforcement agencies and local communities to safeguard wildlife resources. Police are appealing to anyone possessing information about the incident or the suspects to come forward and assist the investigation.
