Legislature confirms Destry as new central bank chief

The House of Representatives in Indonesia recently confirmed Destry Damayanti as the new central bank governor, following Perry Warjiyo's abrupt resignation in July. Destry, a 62-year-old economist and deputy governor at Bank Indonesia (BI) since 2019, was the only candidate nominated by President Prabowo Subianto last month. She had been serving as acting chief since Perry's departure.

Prabowo's nomination of a successor had raised concerns about potential political interference, as his nephew Thomas Djiwandono had also been considered. Destry's nomination was seen as a positive sign for policy continuity. During a confirmation hearing, she pledged to uphold the mission of maintaining BI's relevance and credibility while promoting sustainable economic growth.

Perry's resignation, the second major economic policymaker to leave since Prabowo's October 2024 appointment, has raised speculation about pressure to advance the government's pro-growth agenda. This comes amid challenges for BI, including a plummeting rupiah and a slumping stock market. The bank's board of governors, consisting of the governor and several deputies, is responsible for monetary policy and setting interest rates.

Perry's final policy meeting in July saw the bank maintaining borrowing costs at 5.75 percent, despite a 100-point annual increase that may have disappointed the government.
