Kuching man admits snatching mother’s gold necklace, judge jails him seven years

KUCHING, September 1 — A 26-year-old food delivery rider, Stanley Wong, has been sentenced to seven years in prison and five strokes of the cane for stealing his own mother's gold necklace. In court, he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 392 of the Penal Code, which allows for up to 14 years of imprisonment and a fine or whipping.

The crime took place at their residence in Kampung Stutong Baru on August 27, 2026, around 10:20 am. His 45-year-old mother, who was sitting in the living room, was approached from behind by the accused, who then snatched the gold necklace she was wearing before fleeing. The necklace, valued at RM1,000, was later recovered from a location where the accused had sold it.

Police found that the accused had been under the influence of drugs at the time of the crime, with urine tests confirming the presence of amphetamine and methamphetamine. Police also discovered that Stanley Wong had a history of prior criminal offenses, notably involving drugs. During his plea for leniency, the defendant claimed he stole the necklace to obtain money for shopping.
