Kozhikode Aboobacker, composer and noted Mappilapattu veteran, passes away

Kozhikode Aboobacker, a revered music composer, singer, and tablist known affectionately as ‘Avukkakka’, has passed away at the age of 80 on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, following a stroke. Widely regarded across South India for his significant contributions to Mappilapattu, a traditional Muslim folk song style hailing from the Malabar region of Keralam, Aboobacker had been receiving medical treatment when he composed a new melody two days prior to becoming bedridden.

His prolific career, spanning several decades, saw him composing over 3,000 songs for various performances, broadcasts, and albums. Numerous leading playback singers, including K.J. Yesudas, K.S. Chithra, G. Venugopal, Minmini, and M.G. Sreekumar, have sung his compositions. Aboobacker's unique ability to merge traditional Malabar folk rhythms with intricate melodic structures garnered critical acclaim.

Some of his most notable works include 'Karayanum Parayanum Manamthurannirikkanum' by K.J. Yesudas and 'Yatheeminathani' by K.S. Chithra. Unfortunately, his final project, the book 'Eenangalude Sulthan' by Hameed Koliyadukkam chronicling his life and career, was cancelled due to his deteriorating health. Aboobacker, who initially launched his career with the musical troupe of the legendary composer M.S.

Baburaj, was also a gifted tablist who accompanied major recording sessions for Indian film music maestros like G. Devarajan and Bombay Ravi. He shared a lifelong bond with the late actor Mamukkoya, whom he attended school with in Kozhikode. The funeral services were scheduled for later on Tuesday, with Aboobacker being survived by his children Ghulam Ali, Roshni, Femina, and Sajina, and predeceased by a son, Fayas.
