In a scorching Spain, the traditional folding hand fan is having a moment

In the blistering Spanish summer of 2026, the traditional folding hand fan, known as the abanico, has experienced a resurgence in popularity. Citizens of all ages have taken to using the compact accessory to combat the sweltering heat. The fan, small enough to fit into a purse, can be easily opened into a semicircle, creating a refreshing breeze with a simple flick of the wrist.

As successive heat waves pushed temperatures to punishing levels, the abanico became an essential accessory embraced by both the young and old across Spain and beyond. Women, in particular, were seen unfurling them on public transport, at concerts, and at music festivals. During Madrid’s Pride celebrations in July, rainbow-colored abanicos were particularly prevalent.

One 20-year-old Ana Feliu was seen blocking the sun with a paper abanico she had received during a Valencian festival. She carries it with her wherever she goes during the summer months. "This is my favorite, but I have many," she told The Associated Press near Madrid's Puerta del Sol square.

Even men, like 53-year-old David González, have taken advantage of the fan's cooling properties. He sported an abanico adorned with pinks, purples, and reds. "At first, I felt a little self-conscious, because it's something that's mainly associated with women, but I have to admit it serves a purpose — and it brightens my day," he admitted to The Associated Press in Madrid.

Although the abanico has its roots in Asia, historians believe the folding fan made its way to Europe through Portuguese maritime trade with Asia in the 15th and 16th centuries. The Spanish painter Diego Velázquez captured the fan's iconic image in his enigmatic painting, "The Lady with a Fan," painted during the mid-17th century.
