Kitchen knives, 4-minute standoff, failed tasers: What we know about NYC Times Square stabbing

On Monday afternoon, a 49-year-old woman named Pamela Cisneros allegedly stabbed two individuals in New York City's Times Square. The attack occurred near West 41st Street and Seventh Avenue, close to an NYPD substation and one of the city's busiest tourist areas. Cisneros approached a 68-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman, stabbing both victims in the abdomen within around 20 seconds, according to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Both victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital; the woman died from her injuries, while the man remained in stable condition.

After the stabbing, Cisneros ran towards the NYPD substation, where officers attempted to persuade her to drop the knives. Despite being tasered twice, she continued to approach the officers with the knives and threatened them, telling them she would kill them. Two officers then opened fire, shooting Cisneros dead. Cisneros had a documented mental health history with the NYPD and had no prior arrest record with the police department.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani praised the officers for preventing a worse attack and ensuring the families affected by the incident were supported during the aftermath.
