Police investigating ‘targeted shooting’ in Kitchener

On August 31, 2026, a woman stabbed at least two individuals, resulting in one fatality, in the bustling heart of New York City's Times Square. Nearly a week later, on September 1, 2026, police officers ultimately shot and killed the suspect after she allegedly refused to relinquish two knives. The second victim's condition remains undisclosed.

Aliou Diaye, a 62-year-old vendor who witnessed the attack, provided insight into the incident. Speaking shortly before 4:30 PM near Seventh Avenue and West 41st Street, Diaye recounted how the woman approached the victim and stabbed them in the stomach without uttering a word. He and a companion promptly called 911, and the victim succumbed to the injuries on the sidewalk after being attended to by emergency responders.

Subsequent police intervention saw the woman initially subdued in a tense standoff near West 43rd Street, close to a NYPD substation. Videos circulating from the scene depicted the woman clutching knives in each hand as officers repeatedly demanded she drop them, some even suggesting the use of a Taser. Despite the officers' persistent commands, the woman advanced towards them, and at least two or three gunshots were heard before she fell. Multiple officers encircled her, with Times Square billboards visible in the background.

An eyewitness described the scene as the woman lying on the pavement, blood spreading around her while medical personnel provided assistance. Paramedics transported her to a hospital on a stretcher.
