Kaneshie traders fear loss of livelihood as GARID project forces six-month relocation

Traders at the Kaneshie Market in Accra are apprehensive about the potential loss of their income as the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project's construction works commence. The traders have been notified that they must vacate the area for approximately six months to facilitate the construction of a major drainage channel, aimed at mitigating flooding in the region.

While the traders recognize the significance of the project in enhancing drainage and reducing flooding, they express concern over their ability to sustain themselves and their families during the relocation period. They fear that the absence from their trading activities for six months could leave them without the necessary income to support their livelihoods.

Speaking to Adom News reporter Prince Owusu Asiedu, ahead of the project's start on September 7, some of the traders implored the authorities to consider their situation and provide measures to alleviate their hardships during the construction phase. They underscored the importance of development but emphasized that their livelihoods must also be safeguarded.

The traders are worried that without any form of assistance or alternative trading methods, they may struggle to provide for their families' basic needs. Other drivers, who have been allocated a new location to continue their businesses, have welcomed the move.
