Joko Anwar's Ambitious 'Satan's Slaves: Origin' to Hit Theaters in 2027

Indonesian horror franchise Satan's Slaves is set to release its third installment, Satan's Slaves: Origin, in theaters in 2027. Writer and director Joko Anwar revealed that this film will delve deeper into the origins of the demonic pact that has captivated audiences in the previous two films, Satan's Slaves (2017) and Satan's Slaves: Communion (2022).

The production house announced these plans in a press release, stating that the film will explore the backstory of characters Darminah (Asmara Abigail) and Batara (Fachri Albar), who have piqued fans' curiosity with their mysterious pasts. The new Satan's Slaves film will take the story to 16th-century Strasbourg, where mass hysteria was recorded in 1518, and then jump to a haunted lighthouse on Java's southern coast in the 17th century.

It will be the most ambitious production yet, filmed in seven languages, including Indonesian, Alsatian, Portuguese, Javanese, Dutch, Turkish, and Latin. Korean studio Barunson E&A, known for its collaboration with Bong Joon Ho's Parasite, has secured the international sales rights for the film, which will be showcased at the Toronto Film Festival's inaugural market in September.
