Israel-Greece air defence deal to be 'scaled up' with UAE as contender, sources say

Israel plans to "scale up" the export of its layered air-defence system, sold to Greece, with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as its desired buyer, according to sources familiar with ongoing discussions. Talks between Israel and the UAE, in conjunction with the US, aim to address a gap in the Emirates' "layered defence" capabilities.

The $3.5bn sale of these systems to Greece is considered a model for Israel's future export efforts. Israel's systems are viewed as more affordable and exportable compared to those offered by the US. The UAE, which already cooperates with Israel on defense matters, is seen as a prime candidate for these systems. Both countries have previously collaborated on pursuing the joint development and acquisition of weapons systems.

While the UAE operates US-made Patriot and Thaad air defence systems, it currently lacks a fully layered air-defence system.
