Islamic affairs minister denounces Malaysian’s participation in Bangkok transgender pageant

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 1 — The Malaysian Islamic Affairs Minister, Senator Dr Zulkifli Hasan, has vehemently denounced the nation's representative in a transgender beauty contest held in Bangkok last Sunday. In a Facebook statement, the minister expressed deep concern that such participation not only damages Malaysia's global image but also directly contradicts Islamic doctrines, local customs, and the moral standards upheld by Malaysians.

The minister unequivocally stated that imitating the opposite sex, or tasyabbuh, and advocating for a transgender lifestyle are deemed "haram" (forbidden) under Islamic law and prohibited by Malaysian Syariah laws. He firmly emphasized that neither religious authorities nor the Malaysian government had endorsed or recognized any organization or involvement in such events.

The minister called upon the public to refrain from sensationalizing or glorifying activities that go against Islamic teachings and urged them to prioritize moral values and the faith of the Muslim community. He further added that religious leaders will collaborate with relevant authorities to explore potential legal actions against those involved.

The minister's remarks came after a video surfaced on social media showcasing an individual allegedly representing Malaysia at an international transgender beauty pageant, sparking a range of reactions from the online community.
