Iran ready to reciprocate if US honours deal, Pezeshkian says

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that the Islamic Republic is prepared to engage in peace talks with the United States, provided Washington adheres to the commitments made in June. Speaking at a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, Mr Pezeshkian asserted that Tehran would immediately reciprocate any compliance from the US with the June 17 framework for peace.

The Iranian president criticized the US for violating the interim agreement, which had been in place for less than two weeks before Washington started making excessive demands and failing to fulfill its commitments. Mr Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran's response to US actions was a justified reaction, though he did not specify the measures taken by Tehran.

He added that Iran would reciprocate if the US returned to its commitments under the memorandum of understanding. Meanwhile, the US has intensified economic pressure on Tehran following a fresh exchange of fire between the two nations, with the recent strikes near the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's retaliation against US bases in Jordan.

Trump mentioned that the US would retaliate "hard" while also hinting at the possibility of diplomatic engagement, stating that Iran "wants to meet so badly." Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that those engaging with Iran risked being cut off from the dollar-based financial system, as Washington seeks international support for its efforts to sever Iran's financial lifelines.
