IGP DEPLOYS ARMOURED VEHICLES TO NEW WINNEBA AS VIOLENCE ERUPTS

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has sent a reinforced patrol team, comprising two armoured vehicles from the Police National Headquarters, to New Winneba in Ghana's Central Region in response to a violent clash that has claimed three lives and left approximately 15 others wounded. The unrest erupted in the town on September 1, 2026, when around 300 enraged individuals, allegedly equipped with firearms, rocks, cutlasses, and sticks, descended upon New Winneba.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the group, believed to be from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze, and Gomoa Pomadze, launched an attack on locals, businesses, and homes, causing injuries and property damage. About 15 injured individuals, including a police officer, have been transported to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical attention.

Three fatalities have been confirmed. In the wake of the violence, personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were also dispatched to the impacted zones to restore order and deter further escalation. The IGP's subsequent reinforcement is aimed at augmenting the security presence and protecting lives and property as the police strive to stabilize the situation.

While the situation is currently under control, the motives underlying the mob's actions remain unknown. The police have stated that additional information will be released as investigations advance. The deployment of armoured vehicles and extra personnel from the national headquarters underscores the police's commitment to addressing the incident and preventing future violence.

The police have also called upon the public to remain composed and cooperate with law enforcement as they strive to maintain peace in New Winneba.
