I tried Sony's new ULT Tower party speakers, and they shook me to my core — here's everything you need to know about the striking new models

Sony has unveiled three new party speakers: the ULT Tower 5, ULT Tower 7, and ULT Tower Max. Priced at £349 (£470 / AU$660), £499 (£680 / AU$940), and £1,299 (£1,800 / AU$2,500) respectively, these speakers promise to deliver massive audio output for parties, DJ sets, or karaoke sessions.

Designed around newly developed large, circular woofers, Sony claims the ULT Tower Max offers the most powerful bass in the ULT Power series to date. The circular woofers mark a departure from Sony's typical rectangular X-Balanced woofer units. The speakers come in various sizes, with the ULT Tower 5 being the smallest, yet still packing a punch with a 230mm woofer and two tweeters, delivering a maximum power output of 300W.

The ULT Tower 7 boasts a larger 280mm woofer and delivers 420W of power, while the ULT Tower Max is the most robust option, featuring three woofers, two midrange units, and four tweeters. It delivers an impressive 2,150W of power, making it one of the most powerful party speakers yet encountered.

Sony emphasizes the use of circular drivers and large capacity cabinets, along with ULT Duct technology, to create deeper and more powerful bass. The speakers offer multiple sound modes, including two ULT modes for enhancing deep bass, a Flat mode for a more neutral, balanced sound, and a Live mode that focuses on spaciousness and vocal clarity.

Tested by a reporter, the ULT Tower 5 impressed with its raw power and sound quality, particularly in handling bass and vocals, despite lacking the 360-degree Party Sound feature of the larger models. The ULT Tower 7, while larger, also delivered impressive sound, with a well-controlled and powerful bass. These speakers could pose a serious challenge to competitors like JBL’s PartyBox models, especially if the sound quality aligns with the bold design and power outputs.
