House surgeons at Palakkad Medical College go on strike

House surgeons at Government Medical College Hospital in Palakkad have initiated a strike, protesting the absence of essential facilities within the hospital. The medical professionals argue that the establishment falls short in providing adequate resources for emergency treatment, citing the lack of X-ray and CT scan services as the primary concern.

This issue arose following an incident where two doctors sustained injuries during an accident on the campus of the Medical College, necessitating their transfer to the Government District Hospital for treatment. The doctors maintain that such referrals are common, with patients requiring X-rays or CT scans also being directed to the District Hospital.

According to them, the time taken for these diagnostic tests, ranging from three to four hours, can pose a significant risk, particularly in emergency situations. Additionally, the hospital, being a medical college, should uphold higher standards by ensuring the availability of basic facilities to cater to the needs of patients arriving at the emergency department.
