Gauhati High Court slams police press release after mob attacks murder accused’s family

The Gauhati High Court has ordered the recall of a press release from the Mizoram Police following a mob attack on the family of a man accused in the murder of a young girl. The court found that the press release, issued on January 27, breached the "Police Manual for Media Briefing" by disclosing investigative details such as call records, victim's SIM numbers, and forensic findings.

The man had died on December 16, 2025, before the press release was made. This disclosure led to public outrage and mob violence on the same day, forcing the accused's family to leave their rented home. The court will next consider a petition filed by the man's wife, who is seeking compensation for the damage to her property during the mob violence.
