Flying High: Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma scripts history as highest-ranking woman IAF officer

Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma has shattered records as the first woman officer in the Indian defence forces to reach the rank of Air Vice Marshal. This groundbreaking achievement comes just two years after the IAF officially granted Permanent Commission status to women officers in 2010. Up until this point, women officers in the Army and Navy had only reached the rank of Colonel, while the IAF had not seen a woman officer break into the higher echelons of command.

As the Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters, Sharma has been instrumental in spearheading key institutional initiatives and advocating for the academic and strategic defense collaboration of the IAF. Serving for over 30 years, Sharma's career has been marked by numerous accomplishments, including commanding a Sainik School and playing a pivotal role in the selection of women officers for frontline combat units.
