Fish, filth and fumes: The troubling reality at Lavender Hill (Photos)

Near Korle Gonno in Accra, the sun relentlessly beats down on rows of fish spread out on the pavement in Lavender Hill to dry. Women watch over their merchandise, ready to protect their investments. However, this scene hides a troubling reality. Just a short distance away, the Korle Lagoon is heavily polluted, with a strong, unpleasant odor that is hard to ignore.

Fish meant for human consumption are laid directly on the pavement, surrounded by dust from the busy highway, wind-blown debris, and human waste from nearby sewer trucks. Cleaning this environment appears nearly impossible due to the constant movement of wind and debris. The women face a difficult choice - either work in a dangerous environment or lose their livelihood.

The problem goes beyond the women and the fish. It is a story about urban planning, sanitation, livelihoods, and food safety, all colliding in one small space. Authorities must provide designated spaces for proper fish processing, while also educating and supporting the women in adopting safer practices. Consumers need safe food, and Accra needs an environment where food processing does not coexist with human waste, polluted water, and trash.
