Christmas starts in September for Filipinos as expats in UAE miss 'ber-month' magic

For Filipinos living in the UAE, September signifies the beginning of the festive season, as Christmas celebrations extend throughout the 'ber months - September, October, November, and December. The beloved holiday is marked by the start of Christmas songs on the radio, decorations in malls, and households preparing for festivities. Ronn Unsay, a long-time UAE resident, notes that as soon as the 'ber months roll in, Christmas begins in the Philippines.

Filipinos in the UAE adopt a similar festive spirit, even if it may seem early to outsiders. Alyssa Marie Santiago, a UAE resident since 2022, observes Filipinos in Dubai putting up decorations as early as September. They often gather for celebrations, games, and feasts. Annabelle Astill, who has lived in the UAE for 13 years, fondly remembers Filipino households adorning their homes with parols, colorful Christmas lanterns, and playing Christmas music throughout their homes. Children would also visit neighbors, singing carols, and receiving treats in return.

Christmas Day in the Philippines involved a cherished tradition of children visiting relatives and friends, receiving money through the act of "mano," and enjoying a feast known as Noche Buena. Mary Grace Guino, a UAE resident now back in the Philippines, has noticed Christmas displays at malls in late August, even though it may seem premature to others. She acknowledges that this tradition is deeply cherished by Filipinos, bringing joy to her as she experiences the magic of Christmas in the Philippines.
