Cardoso renews VAR call as PSL refereeing debate rumbles on

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has called once again for the introduction of VAR in the PSL, arguing that video technology would safeguard referees and diminish controversial decisions. The Portuguese coach made these remarks ahead of Sundowns' Betway Premiership match against the recently-promoted Milford FC at Loftus Versfeld. The match came hot on the heels of Sundowns' triumph in the MTN8 semi-final, following a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Golden Arrows.

The excitement surrounding the match was dampened by controversy, however, when Khulumani Ndamane scored, only for his goal to be disallowed for handball. This decision has contributed to the ongoing debate over refereeing standards in the PSL, with multiple contentious calls surfacing in the early stages of the new season. Cardoso maintained that mistakes are inevitable, but the implementation of VAR would help rectify those errors. "We should protect the referees by establishing VAR, it's as simple as that," he stated.

Cardoso, known for his vocal stance on refereeing decisions, believes that the introduction of VAR could enable officials to make more precise calls. Despite his own track record of challenging referee decisions, Cardoso emphasizes the need to provide officials with the tools they require to carry out their duties effectively. "Let's not judge the people that have a whistle in their hands because sometimes we also need to protect them," he added.

"Let's create conditions so that we can all work as best as possible in the best interest of South African football." Milford have made a strong recovery since their opening defeat to Orlando Pirates, securing two wins and one draw from their last three matches.
