Inter Milan secured a thrilling return to the Women’s Champions League by overcoming a two-goal deficit and defeating Wolfsburg 5-4 on penalties in the second leg qualifier on Wednesday night. Goals from Elisa Bartoli and Elisa Polli leveled the teams on aggregate with Wolfsburg during regulation, forcing the match into extra time.
Wolfsburg's Weronika Araśniewicz equalized in the 111th minute, but Inter's Marija Ana Milinković restored parity in the 121st minute. In the penalty shootout, Wolfsburg's Stina Johannes and Rúnarsdóttir both missed, while Inter's Ivana Andrés sealed the victory with a confident strike. Inter, alongside Roma and Juventus, will form the Italian contingent in the league phase of the Champions League.
The 2022-23 Champions League final saw Wolfsburg lose 3-2 to Barcelona, who also staged a dramatic comeback victory after trailing two goals in the first half. Wolfsburg missed the 2023-24 Champions League but returned in the 2024-25 season, reaching the quarterfinals before falling to Barcelona 4-1 in both legs. Wolfsburg fell at the same stage in the 2025-26 campaign, losing to OL Lyonnes with a 4-1 aggregate score.
Wolfsburg's absence from this season’s Champions League means Bayern Munich will be the lone club from Germany’s Frauen Bundesliga in the tournament.
