Beloved dad of 4 killed by lightning while jet-skiing

A beloved father of four met a tragic end while jet-skiing in Florida after being struck by lightning, according to officials and his family. Steve Matheson, 41, from Saratoga Springs, Utah, died on Saturday evening near Fort De Soto. His cousin, Marianne Matheson Shuman, recounted the events leading up to the devastating incident.

On the day of the tragedy, Matheson and his friend checked the radar and felt confident about their jet-skiing plans, despite the incoming storm. As they ventured out onto the water, they witnessed another boater in need of assistance. Matheson and his companion paused to help the stranded individual before resuming their journey back to shore.

It was after this act of kindness that Matheson was hit by lightning, according to his cousin. He leaves behind his wife and four children aged 9, 7, 4, and 3. Shuman described her cousin as someone who loved big, placing his family first and being a hands-on dad. His eldest son expressed his profound sorrow, questioning who he would throw a ball with now. Matheson's passing has left a significant void in the lives of those who knew him.
