After student's shooting rampage, Thai school reopens under tight security

On September 1, a Thai school where a 14-year-old student fatally shot seven people, including himself, three weeks prior reopened under increased security measures. The tragedy at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, held on the outskirts of Bangkok, occurred on August 7 when the gunman also killed his grandparents. The incident marked Thailand's deadliest mass shooting in nearly four years, igniting discussions on gun control in the nation.

Upon the school's reopening, a screen displayed the names and images of the victims, while white ribbons were hung on a fence in their memory. Police presence and bag checks were implemented to bolster security. Civil defense volunteers, dressed in berets and camouflage, patrolled the grounds. Some students carried items in transparent plastic bags during checks.

Parents held varying opinions about the return to classes. Thongbai Muenjit, father of a 15-year-old student, expressed confidence in the school's safety measures, yet worried about his child's mental well-being. Natchuda Petpuangpan, whose 12-year-old daughter also returns to school, supported her decision, stating that such incidents don't occur frequently and could happen anywhere.

Following the shooting, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul suspended firearm permit issuance and initiated a review of existing licenses. Thailand is estimated to have around 10.3 million firearms in civilian hands, ranking second-highest in Asia for gun ownership, according to a 2017 Small Arms Survey estimate.

In the aftermath, a Bangkok school conducted a drill to prepare students for active shooter scenarios. Student Adisorn Deesa, 15, welcomed the school's return, noting mental health support would be provided and expressing satisfaction at being back with friends.
