ADIHEX 2026: Rare newspaper page reveals Abu Dhabi’s falconry history 50 years ago

A rare 1976 newspaper page from Al Ittihad offers visitors to the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX) 50 years of falconry history in the UAE. Displayed at the exhibition, the page documents a falconry conference held in Abu Dhabi, featuring activities where Arab and international falconers and enthusiasts gathered.

The conference included a race between foreign and Arab falconers, along with other events, showcasing Abu Dhabi's role in uniting falconers from various nations. Notably, Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak received female participants, highlighting the presence of Emirati women at the event. Historical photographs depict Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan observing falcons and participating in hunting expeditions, illustrating his deep appreciation for falconry and hunting as integral parts of Emirati heritage.

The National Archives and Library (NAL) has curated a collection of photographs, documents, and publications showcasing the UAE's long-standing connection to falconry and hunting. These materials, including "The Emiratis: All Our Yesterdays" and "Abu Dhabi: Dar Al Hilal Observations," emphasize the role of Sheikh Zayed in preserving these traditions.

The exhibition forms part of NAL's commitment to safeguarding the UAE's national memory and making historical resources accessible to future generations.
