4 teens charged in airsoft pistol confrontation at Lethbridge mall

On a typical evening at Park Place Mall in Lethbridge, the atmosphere transformed into one of panic and fear. Police were alerted to a gun being brandished and received multiple 911 calls around 5:30 p.m. Last Friday, four teenage boys between the ages of 13 and 15 were arrested following a confrontation at the food court.

The police response was swift, with officers arriving on the scene within one-and-a-half minutes. Initially, the situation seemed dire as people took cover under tables and fled the area. However, it was later determined that the weapon in question was an airsoft pistol, not a real firearm. Sgt. Ryan Darroch of the Lethbridge Police Service explained that airsoft guns can create a dangerous scenario in public spaces and lead to officer-involved shootings.

During the arrest, police also seized a knife and a baton from one of the teens. The airsoft pistol, which closely resembled a real firearm, could have escalated the situation. Darroch emphasized the importance of removing such replica handguns from youth to prevent any harm. He also requested that parents, caregivers, and individuals supporting young people report any such weapons to the police.

Authorities are investigating whether one person may have been struck by a BB pellet from the airsoft gun. Although no injuries were found at the time, CCTV footage revealed a woman clutching her arm, prompting police to seek interviews with witnesses who may have seen the incident or have cellphone footage.
