Phishing attacks are on the rise, putting Pakistanis at heightened risk of identity theft, financial loss and the theft of sensitive personal data, warns the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). In a public alert, the PTA expressed concern over cybercriminals employing deceptive emails, text messages and phone calls to coax individuals into disclosing passwords, banking details and other confidential information. These deceptive messages often seem authentic and pressure recipients into acting quickly.

The PTA urged citizens to verify the origin of any unexpected communications before clicking links or sharing information. Urgent messages demanding payments or account details should be approached with caution. Additionally, the authority cautioned against clicking on unknown shortened links, downloading files from unverified sources, or opening suspicious messages. Citizens were explicitly instructed not to share one-time passwords (OTPs), passwords, PINs or financial information with anyone.

To bolster account security, the PTA recommended the use of strong, unique passwords and the activation of two-factor authentication whenever possible. Suspicious communications should be reported via official channels to assist authorities in combating cyber fraud and other security threats. The PTA emphasized that a brief verification of an unsolicited message or call could prevent significant financial and personal losses for individuals.
