US strikes Iranian missile sites on Larak Island in Strait of Hormuz

The United States has conducted military strikes against two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, located in the Strait of Hormuz, marking its first action against Iran since late July. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the operation, stating that Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces were preparing the launchers to fire sea mine-carrying rockets into the strategic waterway.

A CENTCOM spokesperson announced, "Earlier today, US forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island." The strikes occurred as the conflict between the US and Iran entered its sixth month, despite recent periods of relative calm. The Trump administration has shifted focus towards economic sanctions against Iran rather than further military confrontations.

The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global shipping route, historically accounts for about one-fifth of the world's oil trade. US Central Command reported that they recently cleared sea mines from the shipping routes in the strait, emphasizing their continued monitoring of the area and readiness to safeguard the free flow of commerce.

Diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict have been ongoing, with Pakistan and Qatar mediating. A ceasefire was achieved in April, and a memorandum of understanding was signed in June, but a comprehensive peace agreement remains elusive. Meanwhile, the US has escalated economic pressure on Iran while the diplomatic process persists.
