US: Deadly flash flood hits Grand Canyon

Authorities in Arizona report that a flash flood in Grand Canyon National Park claimed at least one life and left 15 people missing. The body of a 46-year-old man was found near Crystal Rapids on Saturday afternoon. The flood began when rain fell on the Kaibab Plateau, prompting a rapid evacuation of over 60 individuals from the area.

Hiker Parth Desai recounted witnessing the devastating aftermath, describing waterfalls emerging suddenly, boulders and mud rushing through the canyon, and a debris wall advancing towards them. The National Weather Service recorded up to one inch of rain in just 20 minutes, causing the destruction of footbridges and scattering debris into the Colorado River.

Park officials have imposed water restrictions due to damaged infrastructure, and additional storms are predicted to continue into Monday. The park remains open for limited daytime activities, but camping grounds, the Phantom Ranch, and certain trails have been closed. Lodging and hotel reservations will be affected starting Monday, and rafting excursions have also been halted.
