1 dead, 15 missing after Grand Canyon flash flooding

FLAGSTAFF, Arizona - A flash flood at the Grand Canyon resulted in one death and around 15 people remaining missing or unaccounted for, according to the National Park Service. The disaster prompted evacuations and caused significant damage, including the sweeping of large boulders into the Colorado River and the shutdown of the sole water pipeline serving tourists and residents, as reported on Sunday.

The body of a 46-year-old man was recovered near Crystal Rapids on the Colorado River on Sunday evening, with no further information provided. Coroner's officials were present at the scene.

The flash flooding occurred on Saturday afternoon in Arizona's Bright Angel Creek, which feeds into the Colorado River. Over 60 individuals were evacuated from the depths of the canyon. The National Park Service has yet to locate the remaining 15 people and has urged anyone with information about hikers or campers in the area to come forward. The Arizona Department of Public Safety was assisting with additional evacuations on Sunday.

Due to the outage of the main water line, beginning Monday, tourists will no longer be able to stay overnight at lodges and hotels within Grand Canyon National Park. This disruption will persist throughout the year for residents.
