US Army secretary Driscoll submits resignation

US Army secretary Dan Driscoll has tendered his resignation, the White House announced on Monday, amid reports of friction with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, according to a report by the White House principal deputy press secretary Anna Kelly. Kelly emphasized Driscoll's significant contributions to advancing President Trump's agenda within the Department of the Army, highlighting his leadership during military operations, a renewed focus on readiness and lethality, and his role in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

The United States Army, Kelly added, is stronger than ever thanks to Driscoll's efforts alongside the Commander-in-Chief and the Secretary of War. Should Driscoll's resignation be accepted, it would represent the latest departure of a senior military leader under the President Donald Trump administration. Known as a former law school classmate of Vice President JD Vance, Driscoll had enjoyed their friendship within the administration but reportedly had conflicts with Hegseth.

A veteran of the Iraq war, Driscoll previously attempted an unsuccessful congressional run in 2020 before joining Trump's 2024 reelection campaign. With the ongoing Iran war in its seventh month, the resignation could potentially leave the Army without permanent civilian or uniformed leadership. Hegseth had previously dismissed Army Chief of Staff General Randy George in April and had yet to appoint a permanent replacement.
