Lucknow, August 31 - Since the Yogi Government took office in Uttar Pradesh, the urban sanitation campaign has become more vigorous. The government has accelerated the construction of individual household toilets under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, focusing on expanding sanitation infrastructure. Figures reveal a significant increase in the number of toilets.
While only around 3.10 lakh Individual Household Latrines (IHHLs) existed in urban areas before 2017-18, the campaign has pushed this number above 9 lakh. In 2017-18, 3,09,924 IHHLs were built; by 2018-19, this rose to 7,58,949. As of now, 9,00,113 IHHLs have been constructed, adding nearly 5.90 lakh toilets since 2017-18. This has benefited numerous urban families with safe and dignified sanitation within their homes.
The government has also bolstered public sanitation facilities. Under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 1.0, over 10,000 community and public toilets, along with urinal blocks, were built in urban regions, creating more than 70,000 toilet seats. These additions in markets, bus stations, railway stations, commercial zones, and other public spots provide easier access to sanitation.
The expansion of public sanitation infrastructure will continue in the next phase of Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban). From 2024-25 onward, 2,623 public toilet seats and 1,104 urinal seats have been added. Altogether, 3,727 extra public sanitation units have been introduced during this period. This holistic approach, from household toilets to public sanitation infrastructure, is seen as a crucial step in strengthening the sanitation system in the state's urban areas.
Anuj Kumar Jha, Secretary of the Urban Development Department, remarked, "Under the state government's leadership, significant work is being done on sanitation in Uttar Pradesh's urban areas.
