UAE intercepts incoming Iranian drone, and other news from the Middle East

The United Arab Emirates intercepted an Iranian drone in its territorial waters on Monday, according to the country's Defense Ministry. This came after Iran fired a drone at the UAE, following a weekend exchange of fire between the two nations that marked the first significant military action in the conflict in over a month. The UAE called the attack a "dangerous escalation" from Iran.

Meanwhile, an Iranian drone was intercepted in the Strait of Hormuz, and no casualties were reported. A tanker was also struck by three projectiles in the same strait, but no injuries were sustained. Israeli airstrikes on Monday killed at least five Palestinians in Gaza City, including two who died at the entrance of a residential building near the city's municipal park.

The leaders of China, Russia, and India met with other heads of state in Kyrgyzstan for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, billed as a counterweight to U.S. global influence. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran was not seeking war but pledged to respond decisively to aggressors. The U.S. approved a $800 million sale of multipurpose helicopters to Iraq, despite concerns about the country's ability to control Iranian-affiliated militias.
