Tugendhat replaces Patel in Tory reshuffle

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has reshuffled her shadow cabinet, promoting Tom Tugendhat to the role of shadow foreign secretary in a move to replace Priti Patel. The announcement comes ahead of the return to parliament on Tuesday. Patel, previously the home secretary, will now assume an "international role" to forge alliances between the Conservatives and other center-right parties globally, citing that this new position will provide her with "greater freedom" to represent her Witham constituency.

Tugendhat, a former security minister, has been a vocal critic of governments in Russia, Iran, and China, having served in the Conservative government between 2022 and 2024. His promotion was reportedly met with enthusiasm when he was discussing China-related threats with Taiwanese officials. The reshuffle was prompted by James Cleverly's resignation to contest for London Mayor, leaving the role of shadow housing and communities secretary vacant.

Stuart Andrew, the shadow health secretary, will also leave his post. Meanwhile, Claire Coutinho is expected to return from maternity leave, with a potential replacement for her to be announced soon. This reshuffle is an effort by Badenoch to bolster public support as some political strategists predict an early election within months led by Opposition leader Andy Burnham.

Recent polls indicate that the Conservatives and Labour are tied at 23% each, while Reform UK holds 26%. Badenoch's net approval rating stands at four, significantly higher than Farage's -20 and Burnham's 12.
