Trump pushes Apple to change 'Lake Ontario' to 'Lake America' on its maps

US President Donald Trump has urged technology giant Apple to alter the name of Lake Ontario in its Maps application to "Lake America," as reported by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. According to Burgum's interview on Fox Business Mornings with Maria, Trump personally contacted Apple regarding the change. Apple has already adjusted its US-based maps to display the new name, but Canadian users still see "Lake Ontario."

Canada's utility company Hydro One has apologized for displaying "Lake America" due to the usage of a third-party mapping service, promising to correct the issue promptly. Other Ontario-based agencies, including Hydro Ottawa and Liquor Board of Ontario, have also briefly shown the altered name on their maps. The renaming stems from Trump's executive order following the failure of trade negotiations between the US and Canada.

Google has complied with the order, displaying "Lake America" for US users while keeping "Lake Ontario" for Canadian users. The decision to not change the name has made MapQuest the most downloaded free app in Canada on the Apple App Store. Meanwhile, Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiled a sign near the lake's shore, firmly stating that the Great Lake will continue to be known as "Lake Ontario."
