Rising Lake Baringo pushes crocodiles into homes as KWS steps in to relocate reptiles

Nairobi, Kenya - As the waters of Lake Baringo continue to rise, both residents and crocodiles are finding themselves in an increasingly cramped living space, prompting the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to take action. The KWS Veterinary and Capture Unit has initiated a proactive operation to capture and relocate crocodiles from the affected areas on the western shore of the lake to parks and reserves with minimal crocodile populations.

This effort comes after a decade of rising lake levels, which have submerged homes, schools, roads, and livelihoods, leading to a growing clash between people and wildlife as they compete for dwindling resources. KWS asserts that the relocation is crucial to mitigate the risk to communities and facilitate the reintroduction of crocodiles to appropriate habitats.

The agency emphasizes the delicate balance required to protect both people and the ecologically significant species, noting that the initiative aims to foster safer coexistence between humans and wildlife in the face of escalating habitat pressure.
