Trump has asked Apple to change Lake Ontario name to ‘Lake America’ on its maps, interior chief says

President Donald Trump has instructed Apple to alter the name of Lake Ontario to "Lake America" in the company's Maps app, according to the Interior Chief of the United States. This request came in the wake of Trump signing an executive order targeting the lake amid his ongoing trade dispute with Canada. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum revealed that Trump personally contacted Apple to propose the name change.

He expressed confidence that the new "Lake America" name would soon appear on Apple's platform. However, Apple has not yet responded to the request. In contrast, Google Maps has already adopted the new name, labeling it as "Lake America" for U.S. users while continuing to use "Lake Ontario" for Canadian users and both names for users outside the U.S. and Canada, as per the country-specific naming practices of the U.S. Geographic Names Information System.

Trump announced the new name last week, escalating tensions in the trade war with Canada that has led to increased tariffs on both sides. The Seneca Nation, an Indigenous group in upstate New York, criticized the move, stating it violates a treaty over 225 years old and shows disrespect towards Indigenous people who originally named the lake.
