Survival chances for victims of the Nepal flood depend on several crucial factors such as access to clean water, breathable air, and emergency protocols. The first 72 hours are critical, as the likelihood of survival decreases significantly without proper hydration. Expert Jennifer Horney of the University of Delaware emphasizes that without access to safe drinking water, people can only survive for up to three days.

Oxygen access is also vital, especially since some workers have reportedly been receiving oxygen, but the risk of suffocation remains a concern six days after the floods. Thomas Chandler, director of Columbia University’s National Center for Disaster Preparedness, highlights that food, water, and oxygen were delivered through pipes in a similar incident from 2023, where 41 Indian workers were rescued after being trapped for 17 days.

The mental and physical well-being of the rescued is another important factor, as supportive care is essential for both the rescued workers and those who manage the rescue operations.
