‘Teargassing pensioners is like a gas chamber’ — Sowore condemns Lagos protest attack

African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has condemned an alleged tear-gassing incident involving pensioners protesting at the Lagos State House of Assembly. Sowore likened the attack to pushing the pensioners into a gas chamber in a statement shared on Monday. The pensioners were seeking their rightful post-retirement benefits after dedicating years to serving the nation.

Sowore criticized the use of tear gas against the elderly protesters, warning that the chemical fumes could have severe consequences for some of them. Many of these pensioners may already be susceptible to the harmful effects of chemical fumes, and such an assault could lead to fatal consequences, Sowore emphasized. He urged the identification, arrest, and investigation of the officers responsible for the incident.

Sowore maintained that pensioners should be granted the opportunity to demand their entitlements and receive the dignity and respect they deserve, rather than enduring brutality.
