Giant Hailstones the Size of Chicken Eggs Smash Into Homes in Brazil

Between Sunday, August 30, and Monday, August 31, powerful thunderstorms swept through several municipalities in southern Brazil, specifically in the state of Parana. The storms were particularly notable for the size of the hailstones that fell, reaching approximately the size of chicken eggs. This was a considerable size increase from the small pellets typically associated with ordinary thunderstorms. Such large hailstones can cause substantial damage when they fall at high speed.

The most severely affected municipality was Pinhão, where over 400 reports of damaged homes were recorded by the Civil Defense. At least 1,200 people were impacted by the storms, although there were no reports of fatalities or injuries. The hailstones, combined with heavy rain and strong winds, led to damaged roofs, fallen trees, and debris scattered across streets. Some trees even fell onto homes and vehicles.

This event occurred amid a broader period of unstable weather affecting southern Brazil, with several episodes of hail in August. Earlier this month, municipalities like Santa Maria do Oeste, Boa Ventura de Sao Roque, Pitanga, Marquinho, and Reserva also experienced storms with exceptionally large hailstones. Marquinho, in particular, reported the most significant damage.

In Reserva, residents reported giant hailstones during a severe storm on August 14. In response to the damage, the Civil Defense distributed tarps and roof tiles to affected communities.

Meteorologists predict that more storms could be possible in Parana as atmospheric instability continues across southern Brazil. Earlier forecasts had warned of strong rainfall, thunderstorms, and the possibility of hail across the state and neighboring regions. Atmospheric systems capable of generating concentrated areas of severe weather were linked to this instability.

While the situation has not been limited to Parana, other neighboring states like Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul have also witnessed intense storms, hail, and strong winds in recent days.

For residents in Parana, the size of the ice falling from the sky stands out as a major threat to homes and vehicles. Powerful thunderstorms can quickly affect entire communities, causing significant damage within a few minutes. Authorities are urging residents to monitor official weather alerts and seek shelter indoors when severe storms approach, to mitigate the potential impacts of such extreme weather events.
