Suicides in Argentina reached record high in 2025

In 2025, suicide rates in Argentina reached a record high, with over 5,209 recorded suicides, a 57.7% increase over the past eight years. The suicide rate per 100,000 inhabitants climbed from 8.2 in 2017 to 11.8 in 2025, a 43.9% rise during the same period. This surge positions suicide as the leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults aged 15 to 34.

Health data from 2024 indicates that suicide now tops the list for those aged 25 to 34, surpassing road accidents. Psychiatrist Alberto Marani suggests that disorientation and a loss of future prospects contribute to the rising rates, noting a societal issue rather than merely individual reasons. Factors like growing disorientation, isolation, and the prevalence of online betting may exacerbate vulnerability.

Economic struggles, unemployment, and financial difficulties have also been linked to higher suicide rates, particularly in vulnerable groups. Argentina's provincial rates vary, with Entre Ríos, San Luis, Salta, and Santa Cruz showing the highest rates, while Buenos Aires Province accounts for nearly 40% of all suicides. Addressing this crisis requires a societal approach, focusing on rebuilding community ties, fostering social connections, and providing support systems to prevent future tragedies.
