Three-pronged tools and iron axes used by people of the Baekje Kingdom 1,600 years ago have been discovered at Jukmi Mountain Fortress in Chungju, North Chungcheong Province. The Cultural Heritage Administration announced on October 6 that a recent excavation at the fortress uncovered 40 relics, including three-pronged tools and iron axes. The relics are presumed to have been used by the Baekje people to build the fortress. The excavation was conducted in two areas, 60 meters apart, within the 400-meter-long fortress. In one area, 10 three-pronged tools and one iron axe were found buried in a pit. In the other area, 29 relics, including 17 iron axes, were discovered. The iron axes were made by hammering and folding 5- to 7-centimeter-wide iron plates. The three-pronged tools were 25-30 centimeters long and weighed 1-2 kilograms. The relics are believed to have been made in the 4th to 5th centuries. The Baekje Kingdom was one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. The discovery is significant as it provides insight into the construction of fortresses during that era. The Cultural Heritage Administration plans to continue the excavation to uncover more relics and learn about the construction of the fortress.
