SK hynix still reviewing feasibility of Japan semiconductor plant

SK hynix, a subsidiary of the SK Group, is still deliberating over the potential establishment of a joint venture semiconductor plant in Japan, according to an announcement made by the company's chairman, Chey Tae-won, on Monday. This news surfaced during a gathering between representatives from both Korean and Japanese business chambers in Sendai.

When questioned about SK hynix's intentions to build a chip production facility or to establish a joint venture with a Japanese entity to manufacture memory chips, Chey affirmed that the company is currently engaged in the process of evaluation. However, he refrained from disclosing further specifics regarding possible locations in Japan, the organizational structure of the venture, or any potential partners.

Despite pursuing overseas expansion alongside ongoing investments in South Korea, SK hynix has not divulged concrete plans regarding the Japanese endeavor. Recently, the company inaugurated an advanced high-bandwidth memory packaging factory in West Lafayette, Indiana. Additionally, SK hynix has announced plans to allocate 54 trillion won, equivalent to approximately $39 billion, towards the expansion of its semiconductor operations.
