Senator Blumenthal urges House to pass Russia sanctions bill

Senator Blumenthal has urged the House to swiftly pass a bill that would impose stringent sanctions on Russia, according to an interview with CBS News. The urgency of the situation, Blumenthal emphasized, stems from the possibility of Putin escalating tensions, as well as Russia's precarious economic state. On "Face the Nation" with Margaret Brennan, Blumenthal highlighted that Russia's economy is teetering on the brink of a major crisis, with a deficit projected to reach $125 billion, which is a significant 5% of the country's GDP. The interest rate on Russia's national debt stands at an alarming 14%.

Blumenthal expressed cautious optimism that the bill would garner ample support from House Democrats as the chamber recommences operations this week following an extended recess lasting over a month. Earlier in the week, the U.S. Senate approved a bill introduced by Senator Lindsey Graham aimed at tightening sanctions against Russia and Iran.

The legislation includes provisions that would empower the U.S. president to impose tariffs of up to 100% on goods originating from the five nations that are the primary purchasers of Russian oil and gas.
