Scrabble pros head to Knox College for tournament

Nearly 60 competitive Scrabble players will gather at Knox College in Galesburg for a three-day tournament over Labor Day weekend, drawing competitors from around the globe before students return to campus. Organized by Galesburg Scrabble, the Midwest Showdown Scrabble tournament is set to take place Sept. 5-7 in the Lincoln Room at Knox College. This marks the fifth officially sanctioned Scrabble tournament in Galesburg and the first held at Knox College.

Galesburg Scrabble meets on Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m. at the Galesburg Public Library, while Mayor Peter Schwartzman and tournament co-director Darla Krejci are working together to bring the event to the city. Schwartzman and Krejci both share a passion for the game and aim to support tourism in Galesburg.

Players will compete in three divisions based on skill, rating, and lexicon. Each participant will play seven matches during the opening round, with the top eight competitors advancing to the next round. In the tournament's finale, the top four finishers in each division will vie for the championship title.

Organizers anticipate around 572 games played during the three-day event, doubling the number from last year. Schwartzman credits the increased activity to the expanded timeframe and a larger pool of participants.

A key focus for organizers is hospitality, with the tournament already gaining a reputation for welcoming competitors and benefiting from local businesses and volunteers. Local establishments are contributing meals for winners and snacks, while organizers will partner with Knox College dining services provider Bon Appétit to offer food and refreshments during the tournament.

The matches will be live-streamed through Let’s Play Scrabble on YouTube, allowing viewers worldwide to follow the competition and witness the historic Lincoln bust and Lincoln-Douglas Debate painting at Knox College. The livestream will also offer opportunities for Knox College to promote its academic programs during breaks in play.

In addition to the main tournament, organizers plan to host a Night Bird tournament at Best Western in Galesburg, featuring four games played in a single evening. Competitors will be eligible for trophies and prize money, with the overall prize pool amounting to $6,000. Local restaurants will contribute to the prize fund by providing meals for winning participants.
